Nerve Root Injection

Treatment for chronic back pain

Also called a “selective nerve root block,” a nerve root injection is a minimally invasive procedure to treat conditions such as sciatica, lumbar radicular (lower back) pain, spinal stenosis, herniated disc, bone spurs, scoliosis and spondylolysis/spondylolisthesis.. It targets the specific nerves that send pain signals to the brain. It is not a permanent treatment, but it can relieve pain for several months or more.

During the treatment, a needle is placed near the spinal nerve root where it exits the intervertebral foramen–the bony open in between vertebrae. A combination of local anesthetic and steroid medication is injected into the area. The procedure is guided by medical imaging and expertly performed by an interventional radiologist.

A nerve root injection quickly achieves pain relief and can help restore mobility and range of motion. Risks are rare, and include temporary numbness or weakness, infection and bleeding.
