Aspira or PleurX

Aspira or PleurX drainage system, is a long term catheter that is placed in the body to drain fluid from the pleural or peritoneal cavity. It is used to facilitate a home treatment option for patients with pleural effusion or malignant ascites. This can help improve quality of life and reduce the need for frequent hospital visits.

Pleural effusion is a buildup of excess fluids in the tissue that lines the lungs and chest cavity. If allowed to remain, these fluids can prevent the lungs from expanding fully, which can lead to breathing difficulties. Malignant ascites is a buildup of fluid in the peritoneal cavity–the area between the organs of the abdomen and the abdomen wall. It is caused by cancer, and it can be an indication of advanced or metastatic cancer.

Having the ability to drain this fluid at home reduces the need for frequent hospital visits and can help patients maintain a more normal lifestyle. The Aspira drainage catheter is a soft silicone tube that runs from the abdomen or chest cavity to outside of the body. It allows you to manually pump the fluid out of your body and into a drainage bag or bottle.

The Aspira catheter is placed by an interventional radiologist who performs a minimally invasive procedure in an outpatient clinic. Using imaging, the doctor will place the catheter in your chest or abdomen, depending on your specific needs. You may require a few stitches in the area where the catheter comes out of your skin.

The Aspira catheter can remain in your body as long as it is needed. If you develop a fever, or if you notice pain, redness, swelling or infection at the exit site, please consult your doctor immediately.
