Ambulatory Phlebectomy

Treatment for varicose veins (venous reflux disease)

Also referred to as microphlebectomy or microextraction, ambulatory phlebectomy is a treatment for varicose veins that are too twisted or superficial for ablation or sclerotherapy. It is often used in combination with these other therapies, as many people have more than one type of varicose veins.

During the procedure, tiny incisions are made in the skin near the varicose veins. A special hook-like instrument removes the varicose vein through the skin. The incisions are so small that they do not require stitches and heal very quickly.

Ambulatory phlebectomy is performed on an outpatient basis. It requires no general anesthesia and you can resume normal activities within a few days. In some cases, the doctor will suggest the use of compression stockings to reduce swelling and aid in healing.
