Vascular Malformation Treatment

A vascular malformation is a rare type of abnormal development of, or connections between, blood vessels. These are usually present at birth, and grow larger as a person ages. These vessels can enlarge and form tangles, which can cause abnormal blood flow.

Some vascular malformations occur near the surface of the skin and can be seen during a physical, but others are deeper within the body and are diagnosed using advanced imaging, such as MRI. When vascular malformations affect a person’s health, and are causing pain, disfigurement, muscle atrophy and life-threatening conditions such as heart failure, treatment may be required.

At CU Medical Interventional Radiology, we offer a minimally invasive treatment option for certain types of vascular malformations. Using imaging to guide the procedure, an interventional radiologist guides a catheter to the site of the malformation. A sclerosing agent is injected into the endothelium (the lining of the abnormal blood vessel) which causes the malformation to shrink and symptoms to abate. Blood is re-routed by the body through other, healthy vessels.
