Varicose Vein Ablation

Treatment for varicose veins (venous reflux disease)

Varicose veins are enlarged, swollen veins that rise above the surface of the skin. They are caused by a condition called venous insufficiency or venous reflux disease, where the valves that are designed to prevent blood from flowing backwards become weak and allow blood to pool in the vein.

In addition to the unsightly appearance of varicose veins, they can also be very painful. Varicose veins will not get better over time. In fact, delaying treatment can lead to more serious complications, including inflammation, blood clots, skin ulcers, bleeding and deep vein thrombosis.

The doctors at CU Medicine Interventional Radiology offer multiple treatments for varicose veins.

Varicose vein ablation is a minimally invasive procedure that uses heat (laser or radiofrequency energy) or special liquid agents to ablate or “close off” the affected veins. Over time, the veins shrink and are absorbed by the body. Blood is naturally re-routed through other, healthy veins.

You may return home after the procedure, and you can resume normal activities within a couple of days. Varicose vein ablation is performed on an outpatient basis. It requires no surgery, no general anesthesia and no lengthy recovery.
