Ovarian Vein Embolization in Colorado

For the treatment of pelvic venous disease

Pelvic venous disease (PeVD) is a condition caused by enlarged, varicose veins that develop in the pelvis. It can cause chronic pain and pressure, which can be more intense during menstruation or intercourse, or when standing or sitting for long periods of time. PeVD can be challenging to diagnose, because its symptoms are the same as other health conditions experienced by women.

While the exact cause of PeVD is unknown, women who have had multiple pregnancies, are overweight, or who have a family history of PeVD are at the highest risk. It occurs most often in women between the ages of 20 and 45.

Treatment may begin with conservative approaches such as pain medications and hormone therapy. If symptoms persist, CU Medicine Interventional Radiology doctors perform treatments that include varicose vein sclerosis or ovarian vein embolization.

Ovarian vein embolization (OVE) is a minimally invasive procedure to treat varicose veins within the pelvis. During the procedure, the doctor guides a catheter into the varicose vein. Once there, the doctor will close off or “embolize” the abnormal vein using tiny coils, plugs or special adhesives. This causes the veins to shrink and reduce the symptoms of PCS. Blood is naturally re-routed by the body through other, healthy veins.

OVE is performed on an outpatient basis. It is non-surgical, and does not require the use of general anesthesia. Patients return home the same day as the procedure and resume normal activities within 1-2 days.
