Varicocele Embolization

For the treatment of testicular varicoceles

A varicocele is caused by one or more abnormal veins within the scrotum. This causes blood to flow backwards and “pool” in the vein, which becomes enlarged and forms a bulge. They are similar in nature to varicose veins, and can feel like a “bundle of worms” within the testicle. The condition may cause one side of the scrotum to hang lower than the other side.

If a varicocele is not causing any symptoms or affecting your sperm count/quality, no treatment may be necessary. However, some may experience pain, testicular shrinking or infertility caused by the varicocele and may require treatment.

Varicocele embolization is a safe and effective alternative to vascular surgery. It is performed by an interventional radiologist who inserts a tiny catheter into a blood vessel (usually in the thigh) and then uses imaging to guide it into the varicocele. Small coils made of stainless steel are inserted into the vein, which block the flow of blood and cause the vein to shrink.

Because it is an outpatient procedure, no hospital stay is required. You can return home after the procedure and resume normal activities. If a varicocele returns over time, the procedure may be performed in the future. Additionally, you can have a varicocele embolization procedure if you have had varicocele surgery in the past.
